Copenhagen museum guide

Copenhagen works best when SMK, Glyptoteket, and Louisiana each get their own rhythm

Copenhagen is compact enough for museum-hopping, but the best art route still needs pacing. Keep SMK as the central national-collection anchor, use Glyptoteket for a shorter sculpture and winter-garden stop, then give Louisiana its own coastline half day north of the city instead of squeezing it between central museums.

Two practical Copenhagen routes

Route 01

Use the city centre for SMK plus Glyptoteket

  1. Start with SMK for the national collection and Nordic art context.
  2. Use the Botanical Garden, lakes, or a cafe break before crossing the centre.
  3. Save Glyptoteket for a focused second stop, especially on a Thursday late opening.

This keeps the first museum day central and flexible, with enough contrast between a national collection and a sculpture-heavy winter-garden museum.

Route 02

Give Louisiana its own coastal half day

  1. Take the train north rather than treating Louisiana as a quick add-on.
  2. Arrive with enough time for the sculpture park, sea views, and cafe.
  3. Pair it with a lighter evening back in Copenhagen instead of another major museum.

This works best on a 3 to 4 day break, because Louisiana becomes a destination rather than a rushed side trip.

Use Artiou inside the museum

Use Artiou to scan artworks, hear Chinese, English, or French explanations, and save the pieces you want to revisit after the trip.
