Lisbon museum guide

Lisbon works better when Gulbenkian, Belém, and Alcântara get different museum half days

Lisbon museum planning is less compact than it first looks. In 2026, major favorites such as the main Gulbenkian Museum, the Tile Museum, and the National Museum of Ancient Art have renovation or closure warnings, so a good short break needs a current route. A calmer 2 to 4 day plan uses the open Centro de Arte Moderna at Gulbenkian, gives MAAT its own Belém half day, and saves Museu do Oriente for Alcântara.

Two practical Lisbon routes

Route 01

Use Gulbenkian as the northern art half day

  1. Start with CAM Gulbenkian instead of planning around the closed main Gulbenkian Museum.
  2. Leave time for the garden and a slower reset nearby.
  3. If the day still wants more art, add only a light nearby stop instead of crossing to Belém.

This works best for an arrival day or for travelers who want modern art and a calm garden rhythm before deeper sightseeing.

Route 02

Split the riverside museums into Belém and Alcântara

  1. Give MAAT its own Belém half day and use the riverfront as part of the visit.
  2. Keep Museu do Oriente for a separate Alcântara half day, especially on Friday evening.
  3. Do not force both into the same afternoon unless the goal is a fast survey.

This route suits a 3 to 4 day break because it keeps Lisbon’s riverfront museums from becoming a transit puzzle.

Use Artiou inside the museum

Use Artiou to scan artworks, hear Chinese, English, or French explanations, and save the pieces you want to revisit after the trip.
