About the exhibition
The exhibition invites you to discover the work of Ernst Theodor Amadeus
Hoffmann (1773-1822), also known as E. T. A. Hoffmann,
from a new angle. He was one of the most important writers and artists
important to German Romanticism and is considered the founder of
fantastic realism. His influence extends to all forms of art:
his stories continue to inspire writers, filmmakers and
musicians to this day.
In collaboration with Editions du Typhon, Maison Heinrich
Heine presents a selection of 18 black and white illustrations from
the artist and author Tristan Bonnemain, taken from his book “Dans la
night of E. T. A. Hoffmann.” This book contains five new translations
of nocturnal stories by the German author, as well as rich drawings
in detail which offers a contemporary look at his narrative universes.
The exhibition is supplemented by biographical panels on E. T.
A. Hoffmann. Hoffmann and his influence on art, literature and
music, as well as general information about the contributors
to the book project.
The exhibition is visible from June 15 to 29, 2026 in the entrance hall.
