Cecilia Edefalk is one of the essential references in contemporary art in Sweden. Since the 1980s, she has developed an intuitive and personal work which, starting from pre-existing images and figurative forms, gradually moves towards a more abstract expression. His practice combines memories, visions, motifs inherited from art history and elements of nature.

About the exhibition

The work of Cecilia Edefalk has always been in dialogue with its time and participated in the emergence of artistic questions. She trained at Konstfack and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. But today, as her career spans several decades and she has built a considerable body of work, the noise of the present seems to recede to allow her unique voice to be heard more clearly. Her work has been presented at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, at Kunsthalle Bern, at the Whitney Museum in New York, at the Berkeley Art Museum, at Kunsthalle Kiel, at BOZAR in Brussels, as well as in dialogue with Hilma af Klint at the Nordic Watercolor Museum near Gothenburg. For many years, Cecilia Edefalk has had conversations with deceased artists – Hilma af Klint, among others – which she documents and integrates into her work process. In 2020, a large retrospective was dedicated to him at the Norrköpings konstmuseum. His works are a concentration of life, different forms of expression and techniques, and big questions, artistic or existential.

The exhibition invites you to discover a subtle and deeply personal work, attentive to the forces that connect beings, images and the time that passes through them. The first discussion took place with the artist and writer August Strindberg, who approached her in a park in Stockholm and today guided her in the choice of works for this exhibition. She participated in the São Paulo Biennale in 1994 and Documenta 11 in 2002.

The exhibition will include the streaming of a new documentary entitledCecilia Edefalk, Jag är inte här, jag drömmer (“I am not here, I am dreaming”), in Swedish with French subtitles.
