About the exhibition

Color passes through all aspects of life and, depending on cultures, takes on multiple meanings. In Korea, five basic colours – white, black, red, yellow and blue – are associated with the five elements and the principle of yin and yang, embodying a singular aesthetic deeply rooted in history and culture. In art, traditional as well as contemporary, colour is not only a formal concern: it acts as a vector of meaning, linking works to a collective imagination, ancient symbolics and a variety of cultural readings.

The exhibition "Colors of Korea, Light on Korean Contemporary Art", presented at the Korean Cultural Centre on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and Korea, offers a dialogue between tradition and contemporary creation by bringing together works in formal proximity. Through the creations of 34 artists – from great masters to young talent – covering a wide spectrum of practices, from painting to sculpture, from photography to installation, to digital art, the exhibition honours the colours of Korea and invites us to contemplate works with timeless and lasting criteria, thus offering a renewed look at the stakes of our time and the prospects of tomorrow.

Among the major figures presented are LEE Ungno, KIM Tschang-Yeul, PARK Seo-Bo, HA Chong-Hyun, and many others, who have marked the history of art by the strength and singularity of their aesthetics. Along with them, contemporary artists in full effervescence – such as Yesookyung, KIM Yunchul, Anicka YI, Jin MEYERSON – contribute to enriching the artistic scene with vibrantly coloured works.

At the crossroads of generations and mediums, the exhibition "Colors of Korea" invites to perceive colour as a universal language, capable of transmitting the memory of a culture while enlightening the realities of today and the contours of our future.
