About the exhibition

"Every artist is a singular gaze cast upon reality, in its materiality and its wounds. What did Hélène Mugot perceive when she found this vine shoot, gleaned from a field? A shadow of a figure, no doubt, which she picked up, then stripped and polished," writes Paul-Louis Rinuy, artistic director of the Galerie Saint-Séverin, which invited the artist to present her works in one of the smallest Parisian galleries.

After studying classical literature, art history at the Sorbonne, and visual arts at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Hélène Mugot spent 2 years at the Villa Medici (1977-79). It was there that she understood that light was her true subject.

"Since my encounter with light, since all my work has attempted to reveal it in the multiple flesh of the world, out of fidelity to its extravagance, I firmly refuse the distorting reduction of a single strategy, a single point of view, or a recurring medium. To create is to polish the world so that it shines and can be seen," explains the artist, whose works are held in the National Collection of Contemporary Art, the National Museum of Modern Art, the Hiéron Museum in Paray-le-Monial, the National Library of France, and in numerous public and private collections.

Hélène Mugot will present her work and her book written with Odile de Loisy, art historian, on Wednesday, April 15, at the parish hall of the Saint-Séverin church located at 3, rue des Prêtres Saint-Séverin from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. The meeting will be led by Paul-Louis Rinuy, artistic director. Admission is free. The event is supported by Art, Culture et Foi / Paris. Come in large numbers!
