About the exhibition
Born in 1917 in Lancashire, England, Leonora Carrington was built through the journey, whether inside or outside. From Florence to Paris, from the South of France to Spain, to Mexico, where she became a cult figure, her extraordinary journey nourished a work at the crossroads of surrealism, mythology and esotericism.
This exhibition is the first dedicated solely to her work in Italy and France and presents Carrington as a "Femme de Vitruve": a total artist, representing a model in terms of harmony and innovation. Her creations merge human and animal, male and female, giving shape to a world where metamorphoses and symbols respond.
Through a chronological and thematic approach, as well as an unprecedented presentation of her diverse visionary creations, the journey explores the artist's main themes and interests: discovering Italian classical art in Florence during teenage years, fascination with the Renaissance, Celtic and post-Victorian origins, or participating in surrealism during her stay in France.
The exhibition thus highlights the exceptional heritage of this perpetual traveller, always in search of knowledge of herself.
