“Lumière du Nord” presents a selection of Scandinavian and Dutch drawings from the collections of the Musée d’Orsay highlighting the artistic wealth of Northern Europe. Symbolist landscapes and domestic scenes reveal the diversity of 19th century northern European drawing.

About the exhibition

This display highlights the museum's desire to strengthen its collection of works by foreign artists. Recent acquisitions by Swedish and Dutch artists sit alongside sheets which, in some cases, entered national collections more than a century ago. Nordic symbolist landscapes, long absent from drawing collections, counterbalance the peaceful domestic scenes of Carl Larsson and Peder Severin Krøyer, and artists such as Carl Forsberg and Philippe Smit, little known during their lifetime, find their place alongside these great names.
